    Program to Help Families Facing Autism Challenge

    Reaching out to families touched by autism, the UT Dallas Callier Center for Communication Disorders is offering a pilot program to help parents facing a child's new diagnosis.

    Strategy Training and Response to Therapy (START) focuses on children 18 months to 5 years old who have been recently diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder and who have received an autism assessment through Children’s Medical Center of Dallas..

    A Cure For Tinnitus at UTD?

    A promising new therapy has made its way from Australia to the States. The Callier Center for Communication Disorders at University of Texas at Dallas is one of about 200 medical centers offering Neuromonics, a treatment device for tinnitus developed by an Australian audiologist, Dr. Paul Davis.

    Dallas audiologist Anne Howell, head of Callier's tinnitus clinic, says the treatment works by retraining neural pathways in the brain. As a result, the auditory system is desensitized to the sound.

Schools suffer lack of speech therapists

“This is an absolute national crisis, the shortage of speech pathologists, because we have many students, children in and out of schools – you’re talking about some 2- or 3-year-olds – that have communication disorders,” said Miriam Podrazik, a personnel development director at the state Department of Education. “They are needing help learning to talk, and they are on waiting lists.”
